Album Review: Shape The Future

A stellar trip-hop record, this boasts simultaneously catchy and mellow songs as it blends funk, dub and electronica.

Throughout, Nightmares on Wax melds an orchestral vibe with a jazzy feel. This is perhaps less consistent than his previous albums but only because it holds more stand out tracks. ‘Typical’ is the clear winner though, NoW really gets into a groove on this song; it opens with brass, then begins to shiver with strings playing a tremolando, with a repeated looping of guitar and brass alongside a delicious beat. Always experimental, this record is more vocal heavy; ‘Tenor Fly’ is stripped back and synthy with dominating lyrics. Shape The Future is spotted with features and Sadie Walker is gorgeous on ‘Deep Shadows’; distorted vocals and a heavy beat are prominent, alongside a melodic xylophone sample.
